Who runs Gita?
Gita principals and directors are Lucille Wood and Di Lucas, who have been the guiding hands behind Gita’s development and expansion since 1983. Margrit Segesman, a Swiss National who studied in the Himalayas, began teaching this very specific style of yoga in 1954, soon after she arrived in Melbourne. In 1960, she founded the first full time Yoga Centre in Melbourne and it has continued full time ever since.
Lucille and Di have been responsible for the design and implementation of the Gita Gold Diploma Teacher Training Course, ongoing Post Graduate Courses for Teachers, the recording of Gita Yoga principles in both books and on video and many papers, journals, articles and Philosophy Courses. They have also established The Khuti Foundation as the philanthropic outreach of Gita International.

How Gita yoga works
Gita
yoga is very
integrated.....breathing.....stretching.....concentration....sense
withdrawal, meditation and philosophy are incorporated into all the
postures.
Every Gita Hatha (physical exercise) class has all of
these components as a natural part of its flow. All of the postures
work to balance the hormone producing glands.
This is why you leave the class feeling balanced and whole, totally
rejuvenated and ready to face the busy, outside world once more, with a
renewed sense of energy and purpose.

Frequently asked questions
DOES GITA HAVE A GURU?
No! We are very Aquarian, in that we believe in self responsibility
and world service. It’s time we used our God given consciousness to
work out our own salvation - we have enough “how to’s”. We just need
to get on and do it!
IS YOGA A RELIGION?
No! Yoga means “Union” - or getting your show together. It is at the
core of all religions but belongs to none. Yoga stands free from the
tradition and dogma of religion (which is man made) and seeks to help
us re-connect with Spirit, which is our true home or source.
|
|
|
DOES IT OPPOSE OR CLASH WITH ANY RELIGION?
No! At Gita we have people practising many different faiths. Generally
they say it enriches their understanding of their chosen stream of
Spiritual teachings. Others feel it gives them a sense of spiritual
purpose without having to be religious.
HOW FELXIBLE DO I HAVE TO BE TO DO A GITA CLASS?
It’s a process! You don’t have to be flexible to start Gita Yoga - you
will gradually improve your flexibility as you attend classes and
practise. There are posture variations suitable for all ages and levels
of fitness and flexibility.
HOW WILL I KNOW WHAT TO DO?
Our Introductory Beginners Course introduces you to the classical
postures and how to achieve them in a sequential, structured Course
over several weeks. All of our general classes are structured,
demonstrated and guided. Our teachers are there to help you achieve at
your own pace, by teaching you the ‘how to’s’ and the ‘ whys’.
IS PROGRESSIVE YOGA RELAXATION THE SAME AS HYPNOSIS?
No, it is quite different. PYR is a series of instructions to guide you
to relax the whole of your being, starting with the physical body. When
this is achieved, the mind can relax and the emotions settle. Over a
period of time, with consistent practice, we are able to access the
subconscious mind and the programs embedded there, and hence choose
positive uplifting ways of living. At all times you are fully conscious
and aware of the process and in total control.
WHAT MAKES GITA YOGA DIFFERENT FROM OTHER STYLES OF YOGA?
Gita Yoga uses the classical yoga postures (asanas) to target the
endocrine (hormone producing) glands. As those glands program every
aspect of our being, it is vital that their hormonal messages be
balanced. With the increasing levels of synthetic hormones in our
environment, it is difficult for the body to maintain balance without
some help! You will find familiar postures, along with an exploration of
their purpose in targeting various areas of the body. It will help you
to understand your body and take charge of your health. Gita Yoga is
neither passive nor super active. You will feel the benefits of
stretching and moving, without stressing the body. The class is
balanced and harmonious and includes pranayama (breathing) and
relaxation. You will leave feeling refreshed and uplifted and relaxed.

|
IS GITA A CULT?
No! There is no Guru, no Deity to venerate, no objects of adoration or
worship. There are no promises to make, no commitments to agree to, no
vows to undertake. Gita is a community of active, forward thinking,
awake, aware people, with a zest for life, growth and expansion.
Questions are always encouraged and one is ever urged to ‘seek the
truth” by continuing to question.
If there was any typical Gita quote, it would be:
'Follow the teachings, not the Teacher' - a reference to the eternal wisdoms found worldwide in many guises and forms.

| |
What is Gita?
- A vibrant centre of growth for body, mind and spirit.
- A community of bright, active people going places with their lives.
- A place of light - where people can learn the inner spiritual laws and values that guide our universe.
- A place of finding answers to life's eternal questions of:
- Who am I?
- Why am I here?
- Where am I going?
- How can I best get there?
- A multifaceted 21st century Yoga centre with something for everyone who wants to grow and be the best they can be.
Founded in 1954 and now as Australia's oldest, full time yoga centre, Gita International is expanding the world's understanding of yoga from the narrow view of physical exercises, Indian philosophy and vegetarianism to a much broader picture.
Wholeness and a sense of fulfillment is true yoga - a union of body, mind and spirit. Everything we do to achieve this end is yoga in action.
Finding a sense of direction and purpose in life brings great joy and inner peace. It helps us to fulfill our potential in every area of life and as a result, we make the world a better place.
True yoga creates world peace. This is what Gita is about - creating world peace by becoming more peaceful ourselves. How we do this depends on our individual make up and preferences. As the great sage of old pointed out "there are many ways up the mountain and we each take the one best suited to us".
